Visit the Louvre Abu Dhabi
Set on the brink of Saadiyat Island’s cultural district, you’re about to step into one of the most pioneering endeavours of culture and beauty in the Middle East, a museum of art like no other. With plans in place to expand the surrounding area into even more interconnecting museums and spaces of public interest, this is more than just another gallery – it’s history in the making.
The latest addition to the emirate’s ever expanding cultural scene, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a 12,000-tonne project by the Al-Nahyan family, who are the governing family of this sheikdom in the United Arab Emirates, and the French government. With an estimated £3bn spent on achieving this masterpiece, you’re sure to be in for one lavish experience.
One of the most stunning new-builds in the world, the museum unexpectedly has no resemblance to its sister venue in Paris. Resting upon a man-made jut of land at the tip of the island, the building is surrounded by low-lying pools and canals that make the white dome, perched atop the buildings beneath it, appear to hover on the surface of the sea like a futuristic spacecraft. The dome is etched out with an intricate mesh of swirling stars that allows sunshine to flow through like starlight on the floor. The space is split into 12 permanent galleries with riverways running between them, giving the musical accompaniment of babbling waters to your expedition.
The space comprises 600 exhibits ranging from excavated works of the earliest civilisations to contemporary pieces, as well as covering a multitude of styles from traditional paintings and sculptures to more innovative forms of digital and interactive art.
WINGED BOOTS WISDOM
Thought you wouldn’t see any familiar names here? Think again! A treat for true lovers of creativity, the most significant features of the centre are the loans from its twin in France, which include examples of da Vinci, Manet, Matisse and Monet, many of which have never before left their home city.
