In recent years the Middle East has been given a glittery curtain of skyscrapers, gold-leaf coffees and extraordinary world-firsts. But what about authentic Arabia where rugged landscapes reign supreme? Enter Oman, a small nation that’s neighboured by the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and the sparkling Arabian Sea. Untouched by modern tourism, expect a desert oasis, long coastlines and dramatic scenery. It’s not as popular as Dubai, and it’s not trying to be. Instead it’s a charming window into this corner of the world’s ancient soul.
Its capital, Muscat, is where the heart of the city beats… but don’t expect shopping malls and Western restaurant chains. Instead enjoy a remarkable mosque, low-rise buildings and the faint smell of frankincense navigating its way through narrow alleys. For shopping, be sure to visit the Mutrah Souq, a vibrant labyrinth of retail chaos where bartering isn’t being cheeky, it’s a sport. While you’re in the area, be sure to check-out the Mutrah Corniche which stretches along the harbour. Ideal for a sunset stroll, here fountains and pristine gardens line the pavement. Start at the western end by the bustling fish market and wander past the 19th-century merchants’ houses, the 16th-century Mutrah Fort and climb the steps to the top of the restored watchtower at the eastern crescent for unbeatable views of the harbour.
The Empty Quarter
Away from Muscat’s main hub, there are plenty of other activities and areas of Oman to explore. The Empty Quarter, or Al Rub’ Al Khali, is shared by four Middle Eastern countries and is the largest continuous sand sea in the world, comprising 250,000 square-miles. Here, the dunes are carved into waves creating a dramatic landscape that’s ideal for a host of thrilling activities. For the adrenaline-seekers dune bashing is the perfect way to experience the empty golden desert, while sport-fanatics should turn their hand to sand boarding. For couples and curious families, why not visit the Bedouin tribespeople, who will share stories of Oman and offer a true insight into the country’s culture. Overnight trips are available where you camp under the stars, enjoy camel treks and dine on freshly prepared, traditional Omani food… now that’s a dinner party story to tell again and again!
Another popular must-see is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Previously holding the record for the largest carpet in the world (a title that now belongs to Oman’s cousin Abu Dhabi), the Grand Mosque doesn’t need accolades… its sheer beauty speaks for itself. Built from sandstone, the mosque is a masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture and its intricate mosaic interior is simply breath-taking. Open Saturday – Thursday for non-Muslims between 08.00 and 11.00, a trip to Oman wouldn’t be complete without seeing this sight for yourself.

Traditional Dhow
Dolphin tours and exploring Oman’s gorgeous coast is another prevalent pastime. Board a traditional Dhow and set off out to sea to spot these majestic mammals in their natural habitat. Witness bottlenose, spinner, striped, spotted and long-beaked common dolphins playing in the wild, and on some excursions, you can even get the chance to snorkel in nearby bays with turtles and other beautiful marine life. It’s sure to be a morning you’ll never forget.
Continuing on Oman’s once-in-a-lifetime experiences, its hotel scene is just as spectacular. For a beachside getaway check-in to Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel where ancient beauty is merged with modern luxury to create a haven of traditional Arabic hospitality that’s mere steps from the Sea of Oman’s sapphire waves. But what would a stay in this country be without a few nights above the clouds? Alila Jabal Akhdar, is a five-star resort located 2,000 metres above sea level in the Al Hajar Mountains. The views from here are simply unparalleled and the facilities are mind-blowing. Stargazing, hiking, abseiling, trekking and cave adventures… the choice is yours.
